Local PC, virtual desktop, or one streamed app?

Put in what each option really costs you per person and see the yearly difference. The numbers are all yours, so the answer is too.

Example numbers shown. Replace them with yours.

Your yearly cost

Local PC$7,200
Virtual desktop for everyone$11,400
One app streamed to a browser$5,400

With these numbers, one app streamed to a browser is the lowest at $5,400 a year for 10 people.

Windows and software licences apply to every option and are easy to forget. Include them in your per-person figures.

What to put in each box

For a local PC, spread the price of the machine over how long you keep it, then add what you spend supporting it. For a virtual desktop, use the all-in monthly figure per person, including Windows and management. For a streamed app, use the per-person price you are quoted.

If you do not have a quote yet, try a few values and see how sensitive the answer is. The result flips quickly when only one or two people need the software.

Why the options differ

A virtual desktop gives every person a whole managed Windows desktop, which is more than someone who only opens one program needs. Streaming a single app delivers just that program in a browser tab, so there is less to run per person.

A local PC makes sense when someone needs a Windows computer for everything anyway. The calculator is most useful when only a few apps force the choice.

What the calculator leaves out

Licences are the big one. Windows and your software both carry licensing, and the rules for hosted use vary by vendor. Taxes, training time, downtime and the value of working from any device are not counted either.

Questions

Why does it start with example numbers?

So you can see how it behaves straight away. They are not prices from FarDesktop or anyone else, so replace them with your own.

Does it save or send what I type?

No. Everything stays in your browser.

What should I include in the per-person cost?

Everything you pay for that person to use the software: hardware or hosting, Windows, the software licence, support and any management tools.

Is streaming always cheaper?

No. It tends to win when only one or a few apps are needed, and loses when people need a full computer anyway. That is what the comparison is for.

The quickest way to know is to try your own app.
